Your Questions About Oven Cleaner On Skin

Susan asks…
Help with a nut and honey cluster recipe?
I made this recipe -
Ingredients
* 1 cup almonds
* 1 cup shelled hazelnuts
* 2 egg whites
* 1 1/2 cup honey
* 1/2 cust superfine sugar
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to the lowest temp. Line an 8 inch square pan with parchment.
2. Spread almonds and hazelnuts on separate baking sheets and toast in the oven for about 30 minutes. Tip on to a clean dishtowel and rub off the skins. Coarsely chop both types of nuts.
3. Whisk the egg whites in a clean bowl until stiff, then gently stir in chopped nuts.
4. Put the honey and sugar into a small, heavy pan and bring to the boil. Stir in the nut mixture and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes
5. Turn the mixture into the pan and level the top. Cover with another piece of parchment, put weights (such as food cans) on top and chill for a least 2 days.
I doubled the recipe and I did everything right but now - after 3 days in the fridge they are an airy mess that didn't solidify at all.
What can I do to save this mess and do something with it?
Admin answers:
Looks like You could add flour and a little baking pow and make cookies. Some choc chips if you have some. Add it to a cake mix/cup cakes

Helen asks…
Oven cleaner on skin?
I got some oven cleaner I my skin and it inched at first. I inches it and 5 minutes late I rinsed it for about 4 1/2 minutes I put some nenosporn and that's it. I wore gloves. I think the most from the spray got o my are. It only hurts a bit when I touch it. Should I be worried? What should I do?
Admin answers:
Please do not do this again.. Oven cleaner has caustic soda and other strong acids in the ingredients.
If this ever occurs you need to wash your hands or effected area thoroughly in cold running water for several minutes assuring that all traces are flushed off your skin. You have now an acid or alkaline burn. Yes it will itch and perhaps feel a little warm however you have done the right thing by flushing it for a sustained time.. You do not need to worry unless it starts to blister and become red or show signs of infection. If you are worried contact your drug store for further advice.

Ruth asks…
Oven cleaner burn..... Should I worry about seeing a gp?
I had oven cleaner spilt on my skin. It was on there for a good 6-10 hours before it got washed. It has now been almost a week since the burn occurred and it is still oozing and doesn't smell too plesant either.
Since I have left it this long without any medical advice it should be fine right?
Admin answers:
Id consult a doctor, oven cleaner is a base, and base burns are tricky because they burn then regroup, then burn some more, so they can get in pretty deep.

Michael asks…
clean potato before baking in oven?
I bought some potatoes that were covered in mud and dirt. I put them under water then I baked them.
Do I need to clean the potato thoroughly before baking?
Can I eat the skin of the potato after baking?
Does it make me sick if I leave some dirt on the potato, bake it then eat the skin?
Admin answers:
The dirt won't hurt you. There is an anomaly in pregnant women which causes them to eat clay; Geophagy. It is best to clean the potatoes thoroughly, not for health concerns, but so they taste better. Many people do eat the skins of potatoes, but this isn't really a good idea. Potatoes are a member of the nightshade family and have a layer of toxic alkaloids just under the skin which are there to discourage parasites.

George asks…
My wife is mental. Can I have her 'sectioned'...?
Mrs Swipe has always been a bit of a dizzy old bird... but lately she has got this idea in her head that raiding our employees pension fund is in some way 'unfair'...?
She knows nothing about business... nor does she understand that 'old people' (much as we love 'em) are a dreadful drain on resources. Only last week, one of them had a 'stroke' at our oven cleaner plant. I drove her (out of the goodness of my heart) to the local NHS disposal unit in my bullet proof limo. She thanked me by urinating all over my calf skin upholstery!
It seems to me that so called 'kindness' is a false economy. Much better to fund next years sojourn in Las Vegas from (let's face it) their pittance of a pension... than to raid young Jaspers university account. Which he will need because prostitutes are not cheap in Sheffield.
Anyway... is there a psychiatrist I can rely on, bribe or otherwise blackmail to have the old bag sectioned?... or do I have to put a contract out on her...?
10 points for best answer... CIA harrassment for the rest...

Your Questions About Oven Cleaning Mode

Donald asks…
I have a GE Oven that I tried to Self clean and it got stuck trying to lock to clean. How do I fix?
It is making a grinding noise and is stuck between lock and unlock and on self clean mode. Any ideas how I get it to either lock to clean or unlock so I can use it?
Admin answers:
Unplug the appliance and wait for it to cool the plug it back in and the lock should turn off

Richard asks…
Cleaning my stove top grills?
My oven has a self cleaning mode which works wonders, but my range top grills are getting ooky and running them through the dishwasher doesn't help at all, and I can't seem to scrub them well enough. They are cast iron and heavy! why couldn't I set them in the oven when it self cleans and clean them also?
Do you think it would hurt them?
My house is a rental and my landlord just shrugged when I asked him.
Admin answers:
To clean stove top grills. The dishwasher won't clean anything cast-iron and should not be put into the dishwasher. I purchase the easy off oven cleaner and spray all the cast-iron grill work. You can also clean your Bar-BQ grill with easy off oven cleaner. It will remove all burned on foods and stains. Spray them to sit over night. In the morning rinse with white vinegar and use an SOS pad to scour off whatever needs to be cleaned a bit more. Also I've used Bar Keepers Friend to clean the gas pilot lighting's You can polish these like new. As long as the oven cleans it self the stove top and grill should be easy to clean as well.

Maria asks…
Is your oven junk after a small oven fire?
A small fire during the self cleaning mode. It went out within 5 minutes.

Tappan oven glass problem, PLEASE help.....?
I broke the inside oven door glass. (note to self, after oven goes through self-cleaning mode, DO NOT then open and wipe inner door glass with a wet cloth.) Anyway, I ordered new glass, now how do I replace it? Would like to get it done before I have to admit my stupidity to my husband. Thanks for any help.
Also it is a free standing gas stove that has this oven. Just in case it makes a difference. Thanks again.
Admin answers:
Don't worry 'bout that brainiac.
Just cry when you tell him you almost cut yourself when it exploded in your face! He will show his pity on you
smile at you and realize how helpless you are without him.......Ya right!
Actually you need to remove the door which you lift up on it when it is open and work it off. Then you take the door apart and replace the glass. Simple hand tools or does hubby keep them under lock and key...

Laura asks…
kenmore oven problem.?
I have placed the oven into self-cleaning mode moved lever into locked position. Held the "Clean" button for 3 sec and returned it to the unlocked position. The door will come out about and inch and the lock is still engaged. I have tryed to manually move the lock. You can feel it move over but still will not disengage. I'm trying to do this my self. Since I'm a college student cost are very high does anybody have any suggestions that might help me get this oven unlocked.
Thanks for your time.
Thats is a great point I thought the same thing. But its been about 6 hours and it seem cool now but i do see a light on underneath an orange glow near the lock mech. I had canceled the cleaning mode and unlocked the door
still wont open. now i cant place it back in to cleaning mode it says something about "door" and beeps im thinking its not lactching right. but it is locked all the way im thinking if i let if go through the complete cycle it would release after it cools but it wont go past "door" display. bake broil and all other still works. Thanks for your time
Admin answers:
"Kenmore" doesn't tell us much because those are made by a variety of manufacturers and they have all sorts of models. There are a least a dozen or more types of locks in use.
I can tell you on some older ones that if you lock the door again and cut the power to it for a minute then restore it a number of the models go through a "test" and reset cycle where they lock and unlock the door.
But often there is a high temp safety switch that is wired to the door lock motor and it won't allow it open if tripped. It could be a thermal fuse. Those tend to trip most in clean cycle.
Good Luck.

Sandy asks…
Can you help me find a suitable replacement baking heating element for my Kelvinator Oven?
My oven is so old that I can't find a model number, it does say self cleaning on it but I've never used it. I am really worried about the watts. I know that I can use a lower watts but I don't know what the original parts watts are and not all parts online list their watts. So is there a standard watts for most ovens?
Also, if I don't have the correct watts, will my temperature setting be off?
I Have measured the heating element as 13.5" between the terminals, 19" wide, 16.75" long from end to mounting brackets, with another 3.25" going through the back wall (I think I measured including the spade terminals).
I have been all over the net. Would you recommend one of these elements that I've found?

2. http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=b87a13c202i517i3467i517&PartID=517
3. http://www.easyapplianceparts.com/PartInfo.aspx?Inventory=453960&SourceCode=1&imgID=2
I have also tried contacting service places but without a model number they just say, bring it in and 'maybe' we'll recognize it. Any advise other than contact a professional is welcome. Thanks!
Admin answers:
I had the same problem years ago with my mother's oven. That thing was an older model and the heating element went out. What I did was : took a picture of the oven and then took the heating element into a appliance repair store close to her house. The guy knew right away what make the oven was, and gave me a suitable replacement right away. I think the total cost was like $7. The heating element was used, but, got the job done.
Look online for any appliance repair stores around you (some stores have used appliances for sale as well - and when you buy a new one from them, they will scrap your old one for parts)...and see if you could do what I did. Good Luck to you.

Mary asks…
Best way to clean Aga stoves?
Please can anyone tell me the best product to use for cleaning inside the ovens and inside the oven doors THX. I am having it serviced for the winter next week and as i have just moved home it is all new to me
Admin answers:
The thing about the inside of an Aga's ovens is that they don't need cleaning. Has the oven been off for any length of time? It's just that you say you've just moved in?
The ovens are self cleaning when the oven is on and working, maybe a little vacuuming from time to time is all that's necessary. If it looks like it needs cleaning just ignore it, all will be resolved when it's switched on.

Sandra asks…
What services can I expect from smoke/soot damage specialists?
I had a fire in my oven and there is soot, and grime on everything. I've cleaned up to the best of my ability but there is just too much soot & grime on walls and ceilings which, as a 5'1" senior citizen, I cannot even to attempt.
I contacted my insurance company today, Saturday, but I will not hear from them until Monday. My insurance is with USAA.
Can anyone tell me what service I can expect from a service such as Servpro or others?
Right Now I am feeling overwhelmed. I've tried mopping my tile floors but the mop will only make two sweeps and the water is so black mopping does no good.
If you can help, I will be extremely grateful.
Admin answers:
They will clean everything. The have special chemical sponges that are made for smoke damage. I was told not to try and clean my smoke damage because I would just be pushing soot around the wall.
If you aren't 100% satisfied you can call them back and have them come again.

Nancy asks…
Can I kick out my roommate I'm in colorado?
I am doing a between semester cleaning. The house has been such a disaster!! We even had an alien house keeper quit! So far it's been the usual well not my mess. However, the other roommate has been gone a month, and I've personally removed more than 3 full trash bins, and been cleaning 2 hours a day. So more than 20 hours so far, and I need atleast 5 more.
Honestly it's small stuff. Tonight he's left some sort of blood spray in the sink. Does not remove his body products from the community sink. I found the remains of cereal in a disposable bowl, empty milk container, and a frozen pizza pan covered in crumbs and grease ( 2 days old). This is less then a yard away from the empty trash can. Not to mention he forgot to turn the oven off for 5 hours. I had to catch that. So if he does this every day... then honestly he's responcible for more then my year old puppy! He does not ever do ANY cleaning. We wont talk about his shavings.
He also has lost his job, so he sits around playing videogames.
This is all that seems important in the contract..
5.4 Tennant is responsible for doing a fair share of work maintaining the house. Consistent refusal to do basic tasks, such as for example vacuuming or mopping once a week. Basic tasks are tasks that should take no more than 30 minutes and no less than 15, though the exact number may fluctuate (10 minutes max). They are to be done weekly with the occasional exception, such as midterms and finals weeks at college. Refusal to do so will result in an increase in rent to the cost of a cleaning service to come up to twice a week.
7.5 The Tenant undertakes to maintain the Premises and to return same in a clean and neat condition at the expiration of this Property Rental Agreement. The Tenant will be liable to promptly attend to any repair that may be necessary and in general attend to the upkeep and maintenance of the Premises, alternatively to reimburse the Landlord for the cost of replacing or repairing any breakages or defects. The parties also agree that the Landlord or his authorized agent may at anytime with prior arrangement with the Tenant inspect the Premises and point out any aspect that needs attention whereupon the Tenant shall be obliged to attend hereto within 7 (SEVEN) days after given written notice to do so. A failure to comply will constitute a breach of contract in terms of this agreement.
7.12 The Tenant shall keep the grounds of the Premises in a clean and tidy condition, free from all litter and rubbish, garden refuse and discarded appliances or motor parts and shall keep the hedges trimmed, lawns mowed and flowerbeds neat and tidy.
kick out is synonymous with evict =) I need help here, not bad word play.
Admin answers:
No, you can not just kick him out.
You have to evict him...just as you would any other tenant.
Edit: not being a smart alick. When you say "kick out" I interpret that as he comes home to find his stuff on the porch and the door locked with out notice. "Evict" I interpret as a legal process to remove someone.
Touch base with the clerk of court in your county. They should be able to point you in the right direction. The eviction process may be different in each state.

Your Questions About Oven Cleaner

Betty asks…
What is the best way to clean my oven? Any recommendations for a really good oven cleaner?
I haven't cleaned my oven in a long time, so it needs some heavy duty stuff.
Admin answers:
Go to the Dollar Store and buy the cheapest cans of spray oven cleaner. It will save you money in the long run and you probably won't have to use as much as you think you do. I did it and it only cost me 3 dollars and I have only cleaned my oven once.
Or you can get some "Purple Stuff" about $6.00/gal in the automotive section of Walmart or some place like that. That will eat its way through anything given time.
Coca Cola Classic eats rust off of nails.... Who could say what it would do to the stuff in your oven. (Imagine what it does to one's insides after a while.)

Mark asks…
My oven smells like oven cleaner really badly when I turn it on. What do I do?
I just moved into an apartment and the first time I put the oven on, smoke started coming from it and it smelled very strongly of cleaning product. I've put it on a couple times since and there's no smoke but it still smells pretty strong. I'm afraid to cook in it and I need to tonight. Any suggestions?
Admin answers:

Lisa asks…
I used oven cleaner today on my oven. how soon till I can cook in my oven?
I still can smell the oven cleaner when my stove is on. I dont want to hurt me or my family with this stuff.
Admin answers:
If you wiped out the oven afterward, there should be no problem..turn the oven on for a bit to bake off any remaining cleaner, and you should be good to go.

Thomas asks…
How do you get oven cleaner stuck in the oven off?
I sprayed oven cleaner in my oven a few nights ago and forgot about it. Now its stuck in it and smells terrible, and I definitely can't cook with that stuff in it.
I heated my oven to 200F, turned it off and waited 5 minutes, then tried to wipe it off, but it's still stuck!
Admin answers:
Ok done this myself you have to use a plastic scraper and scrape away best you can then use hot water and washing powder (use a cup to a bowl of hot water) to wipe over the oven use a nylon scouring pad (not brillo pad) or a non scratch metal scouring pad and scrub away
best of luck

Charles asks…
How to remove white stains caused by Oven Cleaner on stainless steel appliance?
Hi,
I wrongly used a heavy duty oven cleaner to clean stainless steel microwave...
The whole microwave door is now clean (fortunately...) except the handle. The handle now has white stains all over which look like a leopard pattern.
Is there any way I can remove those horrible things? Or I have to replace my microwave? In that case, can I just replace the door?
Please help me!!!
Admin answers:
Use a soft cloth and white vinegar which happens to be excellent for cleaning most anything especially stainless steel. After wards, use soft cloth and plain water. In the future, only clean your microwave with white vinegar followed by plain water. White vinegar also has antibacterial properties.
